“How Does the Salmon Come from Norway to North America? It All Starts with the North Rail Express”

We will gather at Seasons 52 at Tysons Corner in McLean at 12:00/noon. Lunch will be served shortly after our arrival followed by a short introduction and welcoming remarks and Ms. Steenberg’s talk. Parking is free, but there is also a valet service available on the lower level. If you come by metro, take the Silver Line towards Wiehle/Reston to the Tysons Corner station.

Mighty Trains, Discovery Canada: “When it comes to delivering freshly caught cod, mackerel, herring, and salmon from the Arctic Coast to the rest of the world, there is only one train for the job: the North Rail Express. Time and temperature control are of the essence, and there is no train better equipped to handle a speedier and more efficient fish transport than this highly specialized container train. It travels a 1,200-mile route through the steep, icy mountains of Norway and Sweden, with high-tech refrigeration trailers to keep the cargo in peak condition”. Norwegian fish export is considered as the “new oil” in Norway with an expected yearly growth rate of 4,9% until 2050. A lot of logistic operations are necessary to perform before the salmon ends up on your plate.

Kirsten Steenberg, recently in position as Head of Direct Freight in DB Schenker Norway, has many years of management experience from the Norwegian and international logistics industry as well as the oil industry. Through DB Schenker and board work in the Norwegian Logistics and Freight Association (NHO Logistikk og Transport), she has worked for safe and legal freight transport on the road. One of the most time-critical products in her work has been transport of Norwegian seafood from Norway to international markets, including the North American market. Kirsten Steenberg holds a Bachelor of International Marketing from the NMH Deutschen Außenhandels- und Verkehrs- Akademie, Germany and a Master of Strategic Management from BI Norwegian Business School, Norway. She is from Oslo and moved to McLean, VA in August 2017 due to her husband’s work for the Armed Forces and the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter program.
